ICK!!!!! I NEED HELP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ick looks like tiny snow flakes floating in the water.. and on the fish.

the best, and simplest treatment for ick is to raise the temp to 88 degrees and add 1 tsp salt per gallon, also add an air stone or bubbler to add oxygen. as the water evaporates add fresh water.

in 10 days do a 25% water change and restore 25% of the salt. repeat in another week or 10 days..

by then you should see no signs of ick in the tank.. and your fish will most likely be fine and that amount of salt shouldn't harm your plants either.

after you see no more signs of ick, do 25% water changes every week and drop the temp 2 degrees every week until you get it back down to where it was. And don't replace the salt. In about 4 or 5 weeks there should be nearly no salt left in the tank and your temps should be back to normal and you should have no more ick.

Alot of times you can see signs of it days before the spots occur and even stop it before the spots are visible. When your fish seem overly stressed and keep "flashing" or "itching" themselves against the gravel or a plant or a rock then you should raise the temp and that usually will cure it before anything drastic happens....;)

I added salt to my tank the same day i noticed one of my fish flashing/itching. How long will it take for that to stop? I don't have a heater but the temp is 83 here at nights, hotter in the day. Think I still need to get a heater?

The fish may start flashing and start showing signs of stress.

Here is what i do to treat ich.

Raise the temperature to 88' Fahrenheit, at a rate of about 3 hours every couple of degrees(ease up on the temp increase if any amount of stress is shown)

Add salt at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons , again ease up on the salt if any amount of stress is indicated.

I also add a med, just so i know i bombed the tank. I use 'Kordons ICH-attack' at the recommended dosage.

I also vacuum the gravel to remove any cysts and free swimming ICH. If you have a UV sterilizer it would be good to turn it on.

Ich really isnt as deadly as most think... I usually dont even use salt just raise the temp. But I havent had ich in a long time. As long as your fish aren't covered like the oscars at walmart then you should be ok. It really is a very easy thing to treat. Don't fret you should be fine. I hope your tank is cycled.

Totally agree. Raising the temp works fine
