Ick or some thing else? one white dot in center of each eye

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Parasite in its eye maybe? Is that a thing. I imagine it like a old 1980 horror movie type thing
It happens and potentially with wild fish. Just not that curable.

Is impossible with my phone to take a pic of its eyes. I took a new video just now and watch the hole thing and took screen shots of both the left and right eye is clearly worse then my first post. left eye looks like and all most complete cataract. and right eye looks like spider cracked broken glass is weird they look so different.

Thoughts from new vid and pics? thanks guys, and gals

Doesn’t seem to bother the fish. Looks like it’s swimming fine. I’d keep the fish and has trouble eating or acting funny then I’d consider euthanasia.

Hello again. Did u watch the feedimg video from the first videos i took? It takes it hoirs to eat for example. I work 3rd shift had tonight off infot up at 11am fed all fish. This fish still had not really eaten any at 3 when i laid down with the wife for a nap. I just got up at 5 food is fone. Bit.is very messy. First it goes around sucks it in spits it out. Then eats acts weird for sure. The last few days it has been doing the swim on its side to scrap it like cichlids do. Looks like it is trying to scrap its eyes off.

Looked at the first vid. Seems to be swimming similarly. Had feeding issues to but if it’s. It eating and you think it’s worse. Then I’d let the seller be aware and consider putting the fish down or give away to someone who can care for it.

I had this happen on my tank of wild Altum Angels. I had 5 adult angels. The first one came down with the white spot in one eye. When it began to progress I began trying to treat it. About this time a second angel came down with the same thing. I was not sure what it was. Over time I tried several meds. Because effected fish were also showing some fin rot, the first med I tried was API Fin and Body Cure. It purports to help with cloudy eye. It did not held and things got worse.

Next I tried EM via Maracyn. That did not help. I lost the first fish and watched as a 3rd and 4th were effected. I lost them all except the fifth fish. It never had an issue and I still have it.

I do not think it was a parasite or cataracts but rather something bacterial. I also think I waited to long to try treating it.

The fish all behaved normally for a while, Then they were clearly losing the site in one eye they would alter their behavior. The tended to stay near the glass with their bad eye facing the the glass. This left the unaffected eye facing towards anything else. This protected the blind side.

I wish I could offer something more helpful.

I also don't know what it is, but from the beginning it did not look like ick. The fact that is was on both eyes and nowhere else spoke against it (ick spots are never symmetrical on a fish), and also the eye lens rarely gets ick spots; I have never seen ick in eye lens tissue, even in heavily ick-affected fish.
I believe the condition was already present when you acquired the fish (a week+ ago). What do you know of its age, and of the conditions it was in?
What is confusing is why it has grown so fast in such a short time, particularly with your description of water change routine and level of nitrate. It looks similar to conditions that occur in old (age) fish), as well as in other animals (dogs and people, for instance), but of course if could also be a bacterial infection. Again, the confusing part is that typically such conditions develop slowly, not in a week period. I too had an older angelfish who developed something like that, but it was in only one eye, and progressed over a long period of time. The fish lived several more years normally, and none of his tankmates (including angels) developed the condition.
Considering that your fish is acting normally and eating, I would do nothing more than maintaining excellent water quality, and providing good food, but not too much, but of course I would continue observing for other changes. But that is me.
Among my silver dollars (Metynnis maculatus), I have a ~22+ year old male who came to me with a severe case of popeye (exophtalmy), cataracts, and white blotches on his body (first set of pictures except the top left, which is a female of the species). After 3.5 years (single photo below), he is a beautiful, active and healthy fish, the largest of my troup; he continues to be slightly buggy eyed, but is quite healthy and could possibly live 1-2 more decades into the future.
Good luck!

If I do not feel it is suffering and can cure what is wrong with it then I plan on keeping it for life. I have no issues with it being blind I just feel bad for the fish. If it is blind and can live fine its fine by me. I simply want to get rid of what ever is hurting it weather be bacterial, parasite, or fungal i have no clue its condition is surely getting worse in all aspects though i do not believe it is to far gone at this point. I am watching it closely it is starting to swim a little sideways and not moving much the last few hours this fish has been on the move since i have had it. I do believe its sight is all most gone at this point is why it is not moving much. It is really only moving to flicks its self on its side to rub its eyes on the bottom of the tank.
