almost all bodies of water have list of potential species in there. go to local fish and game site and check it out

Why couldn't I keep it for life? Lol there's hundreds in the pond no one fishes there but me and a few of my friends. And I'm pretty sure it's a brown bullhead, aka mudcat

I think the problem is releasing it. You can introduce foreign diseases that tank fish may be immune too, but natives are not.
If you want to keep it for life, that's fine, but I wouldn't release it.
and while it may be legal to keep, it is often times illegal to keep wild caught natives. i know it is this way around here. i wanted to keep trout and they can be purchased from fish farms who stock lakes and rivers, but cannot be caught and kept. also releasing fish is why many species are restricted, and a fish who has been raised on frozen shrimp and massivore has little chance surviving back i the wild later. but hey do what u want it is a free country but id look into max penalties if caught. (up to 250,000 and up to 25years here) might make u consider letting that one go and think about acquiring one properly. again idk how the laws are where u are but i know here its not legal
I let him go, to much to worry about he'd be better in the pond I guess
