The dark line down the middle comes and goes depending on stress, what tankmates it's near, feeding time and age I think (IMO). The first pic is from the 19th. Since then that fish has 'matured' a lot and paired off with another and they show no line down the middle at all now and instead feature a very contrasting barred side with gorgeous deep blue spangling/spotting on sides and an even deeper blue in their pelvic fins.

I certainly don't have a ton of experience with them, but felt that your picture looked incredibly similar to mine when I first got them.

Here is what the one from the 19th pic looks like as of 2 days ago paired off. This was the best pic I could get but you can tell a lot of the color differences from the 19th to the 25th

Your pics looks a lot like mine. It's in the tank with a severum. When the sev come near it, the black line would completely disappear. And today in the morning, I checked on it and it had several vertical stripes on it without the black line. It's a pretty cool little guy

For my guys it took some time of just getting settled in. Took about a week to start to show some good spangling. Once those two paired up though, they really started to pop colors. Wife hated them when i first got them. Now they're her favs. Especially the deep blue the pelvic finnage has going on. I got 6 of them... 2 of them are nicely colored but aren't 'striped' like the above two. They look more like yours but with color. The 2 others are much smaller and still look like the picture you posted.

The BA and the sev are my first cichlids I've kept other than discus. I'm excited to see them grow. I'm going to try to keep them on a pellet diet. What do you use as treats for your BA?
