ID flowerhorn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't feed it anything designed for flowerhorns, they are full of additives and other things design to make the fish grow bigger, it's like living of muscl shakes, it will only kill it.
Stick with hakari or NLS, they are healthy natural based foods with good proteins :-)

She is as mentioned a beauty and some good breeding has gone into her, female or not, that fish is a beauty and well worth keeping. You may be able to add a equally nice male; so you will have best of both worlds

okay.thanks for the info baxtor.is it hikari? is there specifically what kind of hikari? i will try to find it at our local store.yes im gonna be keeping her.many thanks.

Hikari gold is the popular one I believe but there's loads, a lot are mainly aimed for cichlid owners, have a look on eBay, you can get decent sized packets that are cheaper then in the shops :-)
If you see one and are unsure just pop the name on here and either myself or somebody else will chime in and advice you :-)

okay i will look into it. i dont think ebay is a great choice from where i am staying at. i'll just ask from the other stores. btw, is xo humpy head okay too? thanks a lot baxtor.

Personally I wouldn't use anything that's designed for flowerhorns, but do abit of googling and see what reviews there are, also some other FH keepers may have used it without an issue,
The truth is,

With flowerhorns people are so lucky if they live 2 years or more (especially the newer strains of flowerhorns) they can be so genetically weak I wouldn't want to do anything that may potentially lower their short lifespan even more. The older strains used to live about 8 years, but now it's rare to see one above the age of 4.
That fact alone is what stops me having another. I have got a Flowerhorn X synspilium and I'm just hoping the synspilum genes will give it a longer life.
Ask people questions, read through some older threads and research things to find your own feelings on them. Don't rely on Google, they give info in FH based on the fact they come from cichlids, the real information is on a site like this, this is a gold mine of knowledge and experience :-)

yes i think this is a good site and im glad i joined here.and there are people like you who gives good tips and advices.thanks a lot baxtor.i will now try to broaden my knowledge about FH.thanks!

Your welcome :-)
One of the best bits about keeping fish is the learning and learning from others. I mean don't get me wrong some people ram their opinions at you and at times make others feel like there completely useless at fish keeping because a so called expert smashed everything they do. So really I can only advice that you do what you think is best, it's your fish and its up to you to find how you think is the best way to keep her.
I'm always happy to advise, my advice isn't always the best or necessarily right but I'm happy to help if I can :-)
Now.... Get some more pictures of your girl! Lol

Another interesting thing you may not know, FH's are very adaptive to the colours that surround them, so if you want to promot the blue have a nice blue background, or red ect ect.
They tend to be at their best when around other colourful objects THOUGH, I have seen many setups with just a tank and water, and the Flowerhorn is equally as stunning. Keep up with your water changes, try and get into a routine.
Also look at different types of food for example bloodworms can also bring out the reds on a FH :-) so do abit of research or if you like I can abit later and let you know what suggestions Iv found :-)
Tell you what, continue to use this thread or start another so you can post regular updates on yours, and if you like reply to me via a message/conversation and we can talk more one on one if you would like :-)
Speak soon
