ID for this Flowerhorn?

FH's heads(KOK-pronounced coke) shrink or get big depending on their mood, surroundings, tank size, and when they spawn. nice ZZ FH btw.

The fish is a nice example of Red Dragon ZZ or Zen Zhou strain sex is male but I am sure you knew that
The floating shrimp is a good food. I would also use a good quality high protein based pellet as your staple and treat him with the shrimp every other day or so. You will save money in the long run this way. Other food that will help, chopped market shrimp, meal worms, crickets, night crawlers (as treats), stay away from live fish. This fish has much potential. The color will get stronger where you see it now. This type of RDzz will only get the red where he shows it now, but will get stronger making him some what half half. This was and still is a sought after look old school Rdzz:headbang2 The flower line is very nice with this one and looks like potential water head with the right care. I say nice pick up and look forward to the updates on this one! Enjoy this fish they are very special;)

The day I posted this thread was the day I got the fish, so I'm sure stress has something to do with it. He looked nicer to me when I picked him up. Right now he seems really "light". The red isn't as red as it was and the blue is a bit lighter.

I do need to move this current tank mates (Uro, Red Head Cichlid, Red Snook, Datnoids, African Pike, Clown Loach). He is just chasing everybody around.

What do you suggest to feed him to make his colors come out more? You sound like you know what you're talking about so I appreciate any more thoughts or advice.

He is currently in a 150 gallon 60x24x24. Also you said you coud tell his head shrunk? I'd like to know how to identify that.

Thanks,

I would personally remove EVERY tank mates. If that's not an option, divide up and seperate up this FH with all other tank mates. They like bright surroundings, make sure the background or gravel isn't black. Plant or blue background with just about any bright colored(From natural to pink lol) gravel will do(or even bare bottom)

As for the headsize, you can see the crease and shape that the kok used to be bigger. I am sure once you seperate him from all other fish, his kok will bloom again.(assuming all others are adequate such as food, water quality, tank size)

As for the food, I would suggest you to get nice pellet foods for FHs(Grand Sumo, Amazone, XO hump, and etc....) and feed shrimp, krill, and blood worms as a treat and suppliment. The key is you make the nutritionally balanced pellets as a staple and top it off with others.I sell Grand Sumo FH food, and if you are interested, please let me know.

Hope this helps and keep us updated on this ZZ.

How is the Grand Sumo food in comparison to the AMazone. Those two seem to be the two names I get recommended concerning pellets.

I am interested by the way as long as they are affordable :).

Do you think the tank mates are okay if he's completely dominating all of them, or is that still stressing him out? They literally give him his space.

I was feeding him freeze dried shrimp every day, but once I get those pellets, I can use that instead.

I'm starting to learn that there is much to learn in the hobby of "Flowerhorn Keeping".

What is a "waterhead?". What does that term refer to?

Thanks for the input, VERY helpful!

it means big head the term water head refers to the head looking like it is full of water and because it can fluctuate quite a bit with water changes. The term hard head is used for those that have head ( kok ) but will never get real large. If the Flowerhorn is the dominate fish in the tank than removing the tank mates will do nothing. In fact him knowing he is the king should in time help to pop that head (another term for bringing the head out)

yes the flowerhorn world is huge with as many branches on it's tree as the rest of the hobby put together;)
