mrwinkle i would definitely camp out in front of the line for cubans lol

thanks for the good reply e_americanus.
hopefully, one turns up north of the border. are there anyone thats breeding them or are they all wild caught?

In sgp the prices have tripled over the last year from ~s$250 for a 2' specimen to ~s$800-900 currently. Might have something to do with an increased exposure to the media (just like several years back when small specimens cost high 3 digit figures and large specimens fetched 4 digit figures in sgp).

That being said there are only a handful left, I have 3, and as of 2-3 years ago, 7 other specimens in sgp, but am not sure if they are all still alive (I know that at least 2 of the 7 are alive and well).

2 questions/comments:

- are those numbers SGP dollars or USD? if the former, can you convert?

- seems more likely, given your proximity to SE Asia/Japan, that there are more Cubans than you would think out there, than there would be here in the US. we have the sanctions against Cuba and there is also much less interest in gars from a hobby perspective (relatively speaking) than there is in SE Asia.

either way, i think it's safe to say that outside of Zapata, Cuba and their natural range, the fish are rare worldwide--

Pardon my ignorance but why doesn't someone from Cuba export them? I'm guessing they're rare in Cuba itself. Are they on the endangered species list?

I'm talking singapore dollars. Am out now, so am unable to convret. a simple search on google would give u a good currency converter though:P

There's a bigger market in Japan for gars than most Asian countries. Even here its a niche market

I don't believe cuba uses the same cites list, but I'm not too familiar on anything more than that.

Japan seems to find a way to hog almost all of them, but they still are pretty darn rare as Solomon says, outside of cuba/zapata

I'm sure that me emailing every importer, exporter, farmer, shop owner, fisherman, smuggler, and more, asking them for Cuban gars over the last three years is directly responsible for the price raise.

so i guess its safe to say, if you find a gar/some1 selling a gar...you buy it

are there any other gars that are rare?

im new to gars...what are croc II
how about those gold or plat gars. guessing those go for thousands of $$
