I've had him a few weeks now, and he's so shy that it has been nearly impossible to photograph him. He's about an inch smaller than my senegals, who top out around 7 inches, and he's a bit more plucky than they are, though they all get along, I've even got a peacock eel in there and everybody is fine. I got him at a local fish store who sold him to me as unidentified, and paid about $20 for him. My question is... What species is he?

He is young, and he ate a bunch about 15 minutes earlier, so he was still kinda plump from dinner. He's about 6 inches long, maybe a little less.

its Polypterus palmas buettikoferi. no doubt. nice fish too.

its normally not this plump, right? just wanted to make sure its not slightly bloated or anything.

Not that plump at all. We had JUST fed them around 10 - 15 minutes earlier, so they all were still plump at the belly area. It's very active, just shy, I thought I was never gonna get that pic. Everytime he sees me coming he hides, anyone else too for that matter.

wow, great pick-up for the price...nice fish
