Thanks for the compliments, all.

The cool thing about my favourite of my LFS's is that he has a distributor that isn't afraid to say something is unidentified. Results in much fewer instances of upset customers, gives them some pretty darn good deals sometimes too.

The downside to the store is that it is primarily an aggressive fish store, specializing in cichlids. Beautiful fish there, and an impressive store tank with a pacu that's around 2-1/2 feet long.

For my fellow Michiganders, the name of the store is Cichlid World, and it's in Garden City, Michigan, close to Detroit. Talk to Eric, he's the best, and he won't muck about, if he doesn't know something, he'll admit it.

As for the little guy's size, proportionally, when you look in the tank, everything looks fine. He's about an inch and a half behind his Senegal tankmates, and he's nowhere near as thick in body as they are. He's also laying at an angle in the pic, so it makes him appear stumpy.

I asked about obesity because of my two senegals, one is shorter and thicker, and the other one is longer and leaner. They were both not much bigger than a King Mealworm when I got them, and they were bought together. I'm thinking either obesity, or one is male and the other female.

wild max is recorded at ~14". will most likely stay smaller in aquariums, under 12" probably. and they're slow growers :(
