Hey I bought this as a Taiwan reef from petco about a month or 2 ago. At the time it was mostly dark brown with a hint of blue... now I’m beginning to think this isn’t what it was sold as. Any idea what it might be?

It could be. It deffinately an aulonocara so its correct species. What color morph is it.....? Could be Taiwan reef that is stressed, maybe a blue neon or blue face. Typically the Taiwan reef would have a red anal fin though. Thats strange the petcos around here dont label their african cichlids anything other than assorted cichlids.

Taiwan reef is a hap species, protomelas steveni, not aulonocara. I wouldn't have any faith in it being a pure species coming from Petco. Aulonocara/scianochromis mixes are pretty common and usually end up looking close to what you have.

Ok thanks! He pretty much runs the tank and is a beautiful fish but I had noticed no green/ yellowing in his body.

I picked up a small, probably 2" peacock from pet supermarket. It's a mutt, but he's about 4" now and turned a nice blue with a some yellow on his sides. Also the tank boss among the smaller guys.

Yes aulonocara are haps. Unless something has changed in the last 20 years.

Learn something new everyday. I've always thought the were 2 separate, but similar groups. Aulonocara being "peacocks" and everything else lumped together as haps.
