I am not an expert on tropheus but I'm almost certain that they mostly live and do best if kept in groups.Your fish would probably show better coloring if it had a chance to settle in with it's own kind.

Could be a combination of both, a bright light and lighter colored substrate.

Just my 2 cents from my current stocking/setup.
