I have wood in all my pleco tanks. They all seem to graze on it (even the "meat eaters") and it provides some good hiding spots also. Not to mention, it looks nice.
 
My house is like in the middle of the forest, and I keep finding great peices of dead oak. In a couple of weeks I'm gonna have a great peice in a 150 that I'm setting up.

Dead oak is nice, but make sure to soak it in a tub for a few weeks to allow any sap to leach out.
 
I soak them, but the peice I'm looking at now it super dead, so sap isn't really a problem. It's soaking right now actually.

I put the last peice in a running creek for a couple of months and then in a tub for two weeks, because it hadn't been dead as long. Still browned my water though. Don't have that luxury this time because it has been dry around here lately and the creek isn't flowing enough.
