ID: Is this a Payara?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's a Raphiodon Vulpinus and yes they're Payara. The post would've been better served by being posted in the Characin section though as that's where the Payara lovers hang. :D They're very cool fish, I wish I had mine back but my Aramtus shish kebab'd all of mine.

Thanks Ash, I wish I could of moved it myself but couldn't because of the original section it was posted in.

These are actually wolf herring

One of the reasons I think they aren't wolf herring is because of the extremely large in relation to body pectoral fins. Wolf herring are fast preds like Vulpinus but the j turn hunting strike typically seen in Payara(including vulpinus) is enabled by the long pectorals which give them better agility over the herring acting as a brake and stabilizer for last minute turns in tight strike areas.

They're in the our sticky A Guide to the Care and ID of Payaras (Cynodontidae et al.) 2.0 which was written by some of our members who are pretty knowledgeable in Payara. The only thing that threw me was the spot just before the tail but I did some rereading on the web and found out that they more then others in their sub family vary widely in coloration depending on where they are collected. Here's a the link to MFK's sticky section (just click the name below to navigate there automatically) about them as well as a screen cap.

+1 these are the cool payara's that do backflips when they catch their food! You should snatch 1 up!

None of my Rhaphs ever had any spots on them. The mouths on those fish look like Aros. There's no "nose" like the Rhaph pictured in the link.

I'm with Trev, not Rhaphs.....
