Are these little catfish really Ocellifer? and worth like $100+?? Cause today at my LFS i saw similair catfish, same body structure, same dots pattern, but the color is more lighter (but not completely white).. and got like 4 of them and cost $7.99 each.. worth to buy?

post some pics of them and lets see what they are.

So many look so similar from the research I have done today. I think you would really need to know your defining characteristics before you could positively identify a species. I think I'll definitely start keeping some synodontis, but I haven't seen any, in any fish stores here in montana. This place sux when it comes to getting anything other than guppies, mollies, goldfish, or bettas.

So your in Sky Country..it is beautiful in MONTANA.. I have about 5 different Synodontis ..this is the only one i had no idea about... i still have to get better pics because they pictures are not that clear..will try today.:grinno:

I'd say Synodontis decorus, but then again I have never kept synodontis catfish before so hopefully someone else chimes in on this one, but that's a starting point at least! Looks good, post more pics when you get a chance.
That definately isnt a decorus i keep a lot of synos ranging from
Angelicus - eruptus.

look at this!!

http://www.pricenetwork.ca/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46530

it appears to me ocellier is quite common.. are you guys sure that they go for $25 and up??? doesnt quite look like it!! =o

:irked:

look at my new cat that i got from lfs, is that an ocellier or just a doce something... their still 2 more in the store.. im ... hesistating... and dunno and confuse.. $8 each :irked:

sometimes they are hybrids Ocellifer so that would make the price a little different.. i do not know why you chose this ad..this is just one person wanting to get rid of him because he is upsetting their frontosa tank.. not a good example of what one of these cats would be priced for in a LFS :) Also they are not as rare as they use to be.

LIZ, almost all Synodontis range from browns, to beiges, to grays. Some are plain, some with numerous small spots, others with fewer large spots! Even with the best photo, it's still a guessing game. Identification is really about adipose fin size, serrations on the dorsal and pectoral spines, size, shape and location of barbels, etc.. Unless you want to do a meristics count on a dead specimen, your best hope of a fairly close guess, would be to get your best close-up profile and go to planetcatfish.com. and see what you can find!:grinno:

I know it took me a long time to ID this guy,, MY on the rare side Synodontis Frontosus.........thanks !!

Frontosus are one of my favorites. I had a 10" one back in the 70's, but because there was so few references back then, I miss id'd it as a "schall". For a relative big-boy my frontosus was rather mellow and got along with my Haps pretty well.

He is sooooo sweet.. he is sooooo sweet that he drives everyone crazy:D He rubs against them and swims with them and just wants to play with them all day...had to give him his own tank:( but he is my sweet heart and he is almost 12 inches.. I am glad you had the unigue experience of owning one.. they are different then the average synodontis.. one minute he is upside down..etc..always having fun!!
