The face is the only reason why Im doubting pure JD but I don't really see anything that leads me to say hybrid.
brich999the lfs had these for months and couldnt get rid of em cuz they were all black and beat up. My gf was in to get me feeders n they asked if she wanted one. After about a month he is healed up and colorful but i know it isnt a jag like they have them labled. i have no idea what it is maybe you do.View attachment 759210

So does anyone actually know if there is a difference in appearance between a regular Jack Dempsey and A Jack Dempsey that carries the recessive Blue Gene? I'd be keen to clarify this.
Yeah ok. Thanks Jill. It's still pretty tough for me to distiguish but I guess with experience and the more you look it will become easier. So the fish in question at the beginning of this thread is a JD or Blue Gene JD?
I'm really keen to find out because I want to make sure the two pairs of breeding JD's I have are actually Blue Gene JD's as that's what they were sold to me as. So far I haven't got any Electric Blues from any fry but the parents are still juvi themselves pretty much at about 3-4 inches so not getting large batches of fry yet.
Sorry if I've hijacked the thread. I just thought it was relevant to the topic.

I'd say its just a JD, some jds are darker like that
...beautiful fish, I would love to have him!
In my experience, there is absolutely no visual difference between BGJD's and regular JD's. The reason for the purple/red tone is that they are just better quality specimens. I have owned/seen plenty of regular JD's that have a red/purple tone and plenty of BGJD's that don't.
Unless purchased from a reputable source, then there is no way to know. Unless of course you breed it and it produces blues
Nice looking JD![]()
