Hi,
That's definitely a Jack Dempsey :)
Here's a few shots of my Blue Gene JD's I have in a grow out tank for comparison.

You can clearly see a few of them with the beautiful Dark Colour ;)
I'm sorry for the bad pics, I just took a few shots really quick for this thread.

So does anyone actually know if there is a difference in appearance between a regular Jack Dempsey and A Jack Dempsey that carries the recessive Blue Gene? I'd be keen to clarify this.

(YES) @ about 3" if they carry the recessive Blue Gene you'll see a purple/violet skin tone colouration on them. Look @ some of the pics I posted above & you'll see the purple/violet skin tone on them.

Yeah ok. Thanks Jill. It's still pretty tough for me to distiguish but I guess with experience and the more you look it will become easier. So the fish in question at the beginning of this thread is a JD or Blue Gene JD?

I'm really keen to find out because I want to make sure the two pairs of breeding JD's I have are actually Blue Gene JD's as that's what they were sold to me as. So far I haven't got any Electric Blues from any fry but the parents are still juvi themselves pretty much at about 3-4 inches so not getting large batches of fry yet.

Sorry if I've hijacked the thread. I just thought it was relevant to the topic.

You're welcome for the info...
The OP's JD looks to be a regular Wild Type JD to me, but I would need better pics since I can't observe it personally.
It's hard to see the colour in pics, but if you look @ the second pic I posted here you can see the purple/violet skin tone on clearly on the two JD's @ the top right corner.
Good luck with your breeding project & feel free to look @ some of mine I have in the breeding section of this forum.
Jill ;)

In my experience, there is absolutely no visual difference between BGJD's and regular JD's. The reason for the purple/red tone is that they are just better quality specimens. I have owned/seen plenty of regular JD's that have a red/purple tone and plenty of BGJD's that don't.

Unless purchased from a reputable source, then there is no way to know. Unless of course you breed it and it produces blues

Nice looking JD

I would also like to add that a lot of LFS will call regular JD's blue gene so they can charge more.
