Looks like a common male JD. Not one of my favorite cichlids but they do look nice with the darker coloration.

(YES) @ about 3" if they carry the recessive Blue Gene you'll see a purple/violet skin tone colouration on them. Look @ some of the pics I posted above & you'll see the purple/violet skin tone on them.

I'm with Modest man on that one. All Jack dempseys turn dark purple i my tanks. Maybe something in my water forces the recessive allele to express itself phenotypically.

This is by far the longest and most/least educational thread lol. Glad to know its a Dempsey of decent quality, not worried about sex as I don't plan to breed and can be patient to find out for sure the sex of it
