What is this? I bought it with a Chinese name. Trying to find out what the scientific name or common name is in English. Bought two of these, and thinking about buying four more to pair off if I can get these identified.

Hi........

Not pleurophthalma......

This is Channa marulia........growing up to 120cm.....

Good luck!

Pascal

I have to agree, its marulia or something really really close related. grows veeery big as Pascal already said.
And by the way is strictly frobidden all over your country. Fish and game is trying to catch you, watch out !

I'm not in California at the moment. I've been in Taiwan for the last two years. So, when I bought these, they were labeled with the Chinese name. That's the reason why I'm having a difficult time trying to ID these things in English.

Also, does anyone know the difference between a Marulia and a Marulioide? From what the LFS here told me, I translated it to a Marulioide. Some of their materials here tell me it grows up to 30cm. Other references tell me it grows up to 60. Then, I can't tell if it's a marulia or marulioide, because of the language barrier.

And also, I've read somewhere about a blue variety. You can't tell from these pics, but these fish are sky blue. And the LFS called these blue belly snakeheads.

Channa marulius, 五點雷龍, is what come's up to my head as 2nd thought! :p
anyway as far as I know,

The original Channa marulius have a reported max. size of 180cm

however, Channa marulius have some variety called "Izabella",
(but i dont have the chinese name for that either...)
and its reported size would be up to 60cm only!

hope it could help...

Hi.
I have experience in keeping both Marulius and Marulioides.

The fish you have there are 100% Channa Marulius.
They are not "isabella" or anything like, just Marulius.

Forget any crap you hear from sellers etc, those fish will reach waay over 100cm and very quickly. (I have been there, trust me)

They are also very nasty buggers. They get real nasty at around 30cm. This is when they will kill anything in the tank, including their own.

Unless you have the means to house these monsters, I would suggest taking them back and getting something more suitable for home aquaria.

Good luck!
