What did the seller say it was?

Looks Similar to a Monopterus Albus (Swamp Eel) but i don't believe that's what it is but there sometimes black.

the guy just told me its a moray eel. picked him up for free

It looks like a young Wolf Eel.

There you go, the Freshwater Moray or Snowflake Eel. Have one myself, eats anything he can fit into his mouth-but he's mainly fed Jumbo Krill.

from what I remember reading a while back, dont these eels transition from brackish water to completely saltwater? as the mature?

:x im interested to know cuz I like to get a snowflake since i saw one at my lfs and it super cute
and my biggest issues is having to do the transition -_- and i got other fish that isnt suited to go along with it changes

Crap, I meant "not freshwater", not "not saltwater". Also, this is definitely a Moray, and the only Moray that would ever be sold in freshwater is a Tile.
