I swear, my local Petsmart used to have REAL Trimacs, but this is going back a few years or so. They had more of a brownish color overall, with much more black in the dorsal fin, especially the females. I didn't see any red in them, except for the eyes. Sadly, the female was killed, and the male commited suicide by jumping out the back while I was at work.
So when I saw Petsmart had "Three Spots" a couple of months ago, I got all excited and bought six of them. They looked like quite a different color strain than the ones I bought a few years ago, but I didn't think much of it. Rapps sellsTrimacs that are greener than the ones I had, with some red coloration also, so that didn't bother me. But now, after reading all these threads on different forums, I feel there is a very good chance these aren't pure Trimacs. So yesterday, I gave them to another LFS. The manager there said she also thought they looked more like Flowerhorns than pure Trimacs, and she will sell them as such.
I'm not a Flowerhorn hater, I think there are some really cool looking ones. I just happen to have more interest in pure bred fish species. Good luck with yours, I'm looking forward to seeing what he looks like when he grows up.
