So we found this at the state park today. I have no idea what it is. I tried to look it up on the internet and the closest thing I found was "Pacific Madrone", but I don't think that's what it is. Anyone have a clue? What would I need to do to make it aquarium safe?

Thanks!

if it wasent found underwater (or near water) it's not proper driftwood and will never be ready to go in your tank, if it is proper driftwood (IE no bark) it's been so heavily weathered and will have no traces of any toxic saps/ resins left in it anyway and is fine for your tank

im sick and tired of ignorant people who go and find a random stump in the ground boil it for 20 minutes and say "it's drift wood" and then start saying how certain types of woods are toxic becuase that stump killed there fish

Well if it helps, it was near the water? There is bark on it, does this mean it's not good? We have a 55 gallon with no fish in it, could we soak it in there to make it aquarium safe. If so, for how long?

if theres bark on it generaly it means it wasen't underwater long enough for all the resins and such to leach out so i would say no is the whole thing covered by bark? if so it's a definite no

it probably takes several years for normal wood to be turned to driftwood so it would take that long (or longer) in your 55

dont soak the wood in ur house. i tried soaking normal wood after a week or sumthing my tank started stinking like gutters then my whole house
i threw it out. just go near a river or to a beach u'll find sumthing there for sure

Thank you. I don't really want to take the chance without knowing though. I will post another thread in setup and filtration maybe and see if anyone else has done it. Thanks for the replies!

I think that wood would look pretty nice in a good size tank as long as it's fish safe........
