I hate searching through web pages trying, in vain, to find fish matches. Especially when there is perfectly good, knowledgeable, fish heads out there, who know what a fish is just by looking at it with one eye closed.:D
Any ideas on this male peacock?
BTW: Picked him him up as a mislabeled baby JD @ $ 2.79.

Looks to be something like an Aulonocara baenschi. Blue colouring in the dorsal fin a bit of a worry though.
Good looking fish though, especially at the price you paid.
:naughty:  :headbang2 :nilly:

I too would lean on some type of Aulonocara stuartgranti. It looks nice give it some time to see what it fully colors up to before deciding on its exact type. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was some hybrid but as was said at the price it was a steal.

Looks like a Maulana (stuartgrant) but not for sure. If I had to guess I would say a Hybrid. Here are the closest I have to it, or have seen to it. The first is my Maulana (bi colr 500) and the second is my Blue Neon from Hai Reef, both wild caught. Nevertheless will be a georgeous fish I just hate hybrids.

why do you assume it is a hybrid? You can have fish from the same area even wild and the coloration will vary a bit. Not even sure the quality of the parents, if color is bad on some fish it may be from poor looking line. Can happen when nature is not around to kill off some of the fry.

Nice find for the price. I agree with the Aul. stuartgranti... might be a "flavescent" looks like some I've seen before... Not being a nag, but you should split or choose between the Africans and South/Central Americans... :-/

SmokeStew20... the Jewel cichlid (Hemichromis guttatus) is African just not lake Malawi. There were originally from the area Ivory Coast to Southern Cameroon.

And honestly I have to say people need to get over telling other people they can't mix other fish. Sure it is harder to do, but it can be done. I say just leave it to each person's personal preference, and if you don't like it and it isn't causing the fish undu suffering then just leave it.

No, I said that the pet store had it labeled as a baby jack dempsy. So I got him for $2.79.
He is in my 125g Afican Peacock tank. I even just recently split my Mbuna and peacocks. Mainly for dietary purposes.

On the other hand, I am not so hard core. I have a few plecos in the tank--not African. A few giant Danios (dithers) -not African. I would have to go along with "personal preference" as long it is not actually bad for the fish.

I even know of people, ON THIS SITE, who do a deadly mixing of fish: Some mix gold fish with their Africans, South Americans and Asians! But then again, the gold fish are called "feeders":D :naughty:

Thanks for your concern. :) Africans and South Americans do have different water preferences. Good point.

maulana i think
