Pure Mayan? Never seen one with so much green... But I do see what y'all are saying for sure.

I've seen wild ones with even more green than that before, but the shape seems a bit off. Might be the angle of the fish in the pics, but am not familiar enough with them to tell.

yea i'm not totally convinced it's a hybrid, tbh.....I was thinking I might be able to see some Texas in it, but know I don't see it at all

To me being a hybrid is a detriment, and makes the cichlid worthless, so if its claimed to be one, why question it.
And since no provenance is claimed or can be proved, there is no way to figure out what it is.
A hybrid can look like anything, the mother, the father, or none of the above, it could be from a long line of hybrids of any number of species, meaning it can look like any generic no name cichlid.
Trying to guess from an oddly angled photo is an impossible, and useless endeavor.

The fish may or may not be a hybrid, it's definitely not a texas. In interest of helping the op id his fish, the closest match to a true form would be uropthalmus.
Hybrid or not,it's as clear as day the fish is at least part mayan.

I agree with Stanzzz7, its obvious its not a Texan, so that mistake alone, makes it suspect, and not worth buying.
But the idea it has uropthalmus is a stretch, there is no way to know that, without a DNA test.
Here are real uropthalmus.

Thank you all for all the replies! The group it was being sold in is a strictly no hybrid group and I didn't want to just call him out on it without being sure myself.

Really? I understand what you are saying but the fish has so many traits of uropthalmus. Lots of hybrids I agree, guessing is futile, but I would bet my house there is some mayan in that fish.
