I suppose i should have been more specific.. im safe to say the general concesus is if he is a hybrid hes NOT a rtc hybrid?

Right. As every one says, this is what we commonly call a TSN and not a TSNxRTC hybrid. This is what the latter looks like (look at all pics, there are juvies too): http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=304

... or type "TSNxRTC hybrid" in the catfish forum search box and you will see a miriad of threads and pics. Every week someone posts pics of them and asks to ID it.

Ive seen quite a few hybrids in the past and they can be hard to tell. sometimes they look more TSN or more RTC... I know my lfs didn't mis-label him on purpose and he came in with a RTCX. I was there when the bags where floating. so I was just curiouse. we have planned on owning a TSN, a RTC, and a Hybrid... we where just planning on staggering them abit. at least by the time they are big enough to go into our daughters "baby pool" it'll be to cold for her to use it.

Sounds fair enough.

What do you mean by "staggering"?

If a pool is too cold for a human to use it, it usually is too cold for a tropical fish too... unless I am not understanding what you are saying.

staggering as in getting the initial growth/yoy feeding and care. once the fish hit 24" they tend to slow down from what i understand. ive seen alot of the big cats grown together where one doesnt grow from food competition ect.. so figured its easier to try and grow them individually. atm i have the room to seperate the tsn and rtc if one or the other needs the extra tlc.. i dont have the room to seperate 3. once these guys are ready for the pool i will have the room to grow out another.

as for the baby pool it will be brought in and heated this fall.. once its to cold outside for our daughter to use it. which is about 3 monthes so they should be pushing 12" and ready for it.

Good to see someone really thinking through what they are doing.

In general, all three your target fish - TSN, RTC, and RTCxTSN - boast about the same quite fast growth rate. As you said, one needs to make sure they receive similar feeding rate, which is not always easy. Their diet is close but not the same. Usually TSNs are profoundly more predatory than RTCs and will take any non-fleshy foods, like pellets, quite reluctantly while RTCs will inhale them. If you feed mostly fleshy foods and target feed the fish that seems to be not growing as fast as its tank mates, growing them up together is quite doable. It does not mean your way is worse - to each its own... and it's in a way an experiment anyway...

Beware of cats being able to easily puncture the pond liner, if there is any. If it's hard plastic, they won't. If its soft plastic or something like a 6 mil vinyl liner, it will get punctured easily. The usual 45 mil rubber pond liner (garden stores) is usually safe or a 20 mil PVC liner (Home Depot/Lowes) used to construct walk-in showers.
