Yeah, they seem to be the only exception i've seen so far.

woops, i was wrong. Just looked up riverwonder's intermedia and they too have a strip when young.

So while it's true that juvie cichla with horizontal strip get this spangling, it's not necessarily true that they are a "big" cichla

But thanks ado, your pretty much right on the spangles on the upper part of the tail, in reference to the bigger cichla.
