hmmm... I never considered buying a jack dempsey(except the blue one) and I didn't know what were their distinctive characteristics... so if this is a nice specimen then I guess I'll plan to keep it.
She has potential, nice body shape, some pretty good coloring in the dorsal. About how big is she?

The blue splotching on the gill plates indicates female in Dempsey's. Mine looked similar to this one when they were that size.

She's about 1.75". eating already, chased the firemouths a bit too.

So I after a few hours of research I did come by the info on the blue gill indication and the red tip on the dorsal, but I am seeing a lot of darker JD's and ones with a lot more blue spots on the body(and not EBJD)... I also saw a video of one thats black and grey striped.

So do they get more color as they get older like the EBJD's?

Depending on mood, rather they're breeding or stressed or a non dominant fish determines their color. I have a bonded pair and she's always nearly black. While my other one is light gray. She reminds me of mine, if you go in the CA/SA media lounge I posted a thread with my new tank and it's got some pics of mine in there. Go check it out, yours does remind me of mine when they were that size.
