Solomon: is there any truth to the statement that alli's grow slower the higher the tank temp?

I'm not Solomon but I can answer this....Growth in gar is directly associated with temp. (among other things) higher temp means bigger fish (Higher metabolism) but not always better fish..

At high temps (I.E. 30C ) Gar grow faster but burn up metabolic resources quicker as well. A. spatula kept in very warm condition grow longer faster but are also much less fit and their condition is usually poor...

So no they do not grow slower

i would have to agree...there are ways to compensate for potential low-fitness due to rapid growth induced by higher temperatures (modify diet practices), but higher temps will not slow a gar's growth (unless they are so high that BOD is severely altered, which would generally kill the fish) --

thanks guys! i thought it was wrong... i did edit the post before you finished your reply to include urself and jordon too poly....

Any recommendation as to what i do with it in the future?

ok so dietary wise would would you suggest? it was kept with pacu before and takes tomatoes n weird stuff like that....:screwy: i was planning on tryna pellet train it or go frozen prawn route if that failed....

And an interesting side note, both bowfin still ignore the gars and vise-versa... the alli has aparently never snaped at a fish to previous owners knowledge, and has also never been feed feeders so i am hopefully!

Well yes, you are correct there are ways to modify for the reduced fitness particularly by increasing food availability and quality... You know me though I tend to err toward a lower temp / fluctuating seasonal model..

Gators are garbage disposals..Does not surprise me one bit it would eat a tomato. Go with a mix of Frozen foods (Prawn, whitebait, white fleshed fish fillet) and pellets. It will likely take all of this with little issue if any. If it is in with other fish just make sure it gets it's share.

This is good hopefully this will continue to be so... Just be cautious...

i except the befits of this method thou its hard, i find the bowfin to be less hectic the more stocked the tank, hence no probs at the mo... but this leads to issues, ie: predicting correct amount of food, filtration, w/c.. so i chose to go down the high temp route prevent infection at bay if i mess up or any one goes a bit bitey....

i no, i think the biggest upset will be moving them all to there new home in 3 or 4 weeks... if i dont get the order right i rekon i may have issues with the bowfin, but i 80% confident if i get the aro's n polys, bgk n randoms in first then bowfin n gars last it should be ok...

this will be done slowly and carefully with lots of caution and observation...

oh definitely...i was speaking to the general forum moreso than responding to the statement :)

speaking of feeding, i went with "sand eels" today...my gosh those fish STINK!!!

as for the gator with the bowfin...as long as the size is similar you will probably be ok, of course once the gator surpasses the bowfin it will likely be open season. good luck regardless--

Thanks, i too have doubts about what will happen once the gator get big. why my first priority is to find him a home for when im ready to let im go.... please any suggestions appreciated. How long would a 3' deep 12' accros round plastic koi pool last a gator? :naughty: just working through options.... if i where to keep gator for life, id have somewhere to put a paddlefish if some tits repeat last summers advents and import them again....:irked: hate to see amazing creatures like his go to unsuspecting homes! at least i have you'll for advise and help and i will bust my nut to help a fish how ever i can...
