Caught this guy this morning. Built like a warmouth, but colors are different from any I've seen anywhere around my home. Yes, I released him. Also Warmouth have never been caught in this manmade stocked farm pond.
Thanks for any input.

Well, there are bluegill in this pond, and they all look quite different from this guy. Also the mouth on this guy is huge compared to other bluegill in pond. I'm no expert, but just a little more info. Thanks guys! The avatar was caught this morning too. Tis the season FINALLY!!!

I think what you have there is a bluegill/green sunfish hybrid.

if your pond was commercially stocked with one, more, or all of these fish (bluegill, large mouth, fathead minnows, grass carp) than the hybrid makes very good since because the bluegill/green is a very popular stocking species, and it came to you from the hatchery as a contaminate.

I agree on the green sunfish/bluegill cross. Is the cross an issue? I mean, is this your pond and are you trying to keep just bluegill in it? Like stated before it could have come into from the hatchery, crossed from green sunfish that were released into it, or some may say come in via waterfowl or other water loving birds (speculation). It has some nice coloration nontheless. Now you have me getting the Smallmouth itch....

Oh no, it's a most welcome addition, I dig hybrids! This one has incredible colors, the pic does it no justice. Thanks for all the input!!! interesting stuff. This pond is on property that used to be a catfish hatchery. Eleven stocked ponds in total on property. My own private fishing heaven!!!! This friend of mine owns it, and I'm the only person that fishes there. Largemouth, bluegill, catfish, etc... LOTS OF BIG BIG BIG FISH!!!!!!

Yep. Looks like a hybrid to me. It has the characteristic blue gill of the bluegill but doesn' have the spot on the dorsal.
