I stopped in petco today to pick up some fish meds , only place open on Sunday this late. Anyway i see in one of there 8 gallon sales tank a sticky note that said donation Gar 5$. I know for a fact they dont care what size of tank a person has or what they mix any fish with, because they never ask any questions, so I picked him up. I need an exact ID so i can set up a proper home or find one for him.
Needle fish. But for a proper ID thats a hole other story. These fish are not very popular and becuase of that there is not alot known about the different ID's. They occur in the amazon river and in the ocean. Yea salt water. Years ago they were sold as a brackish fish until several video's of large schools of them were videoed in the amazon river. They grow to around 24'' in aquaria. And eat live feeder fish. I have a 11''er in with some hujeta characins and a red tailed payara. They are open water predators and live in schools in the wild. I have mine in a 125g at 80degree's and a ph of 7. It has worked out well so far. I have only had the fish for a month. They are not very hard to keep at all. As long as you provide live food they do well.
Well some of them are. Until the documentary land of the sun or something close to that came out, no one talked about them being in the amazon. But in that documentary it shows a large school of them in the amazon. And I beleive that most of the ones commercially sold are from the amazon, or so I have read at least. They are just a very misunderstood species.
The ones usually sold in store I believe are Xenentodon cancila which originate from India. They grow to about 12" and like to school, so a group of them would be good.
