What is a cyano?

A Cyanoguttatum is a Texas Cichlid, what you catch in Texas rivers. A carpintis is a Mexican version you could say so, but a different fish, always mistaken as a form of a "texas" cichlid. They look alike, so people call them "green" or "blue" texas', which makes threads and posters like this confused. A quick search here on "texas cichlid" will give you hours of reading. On things like TrikkyMakk's fish, it looks like both, and nobody is really going to know what it is 100%. From other posts, it seems that most fish sold as "Texas" cichlids are usually some form of Carpintis, being texas mixed in or whatever. It seems to be like a religious debate here ha

ok so cyano it is, on both mine and trikkymakk's im glad i know what kind of fish i have now thanks hailmike

well carpintis are from mexico if i'm not mistaken so i'm going to go with cyano on the second fish posted. as for the og poster i'm also going to say cyano, the fact that it has 'lines' of spots makes me think that, a side from the fact that the pearls are small.

Gonna have to agree with Mike here. Small, fairly uniform pearls.

Though I will say that Sick_lid is right about a lot of the debate, sometimes it is quite redundant. A lot of times it is best to wait until your fish is a good 5-6 inches and then compare some pics. At these sizes it can be quite difficult to tell.

Thanks for the inputs, I don't mind hearing more from people. I will try to post another pic and get some opinions when this little monster is bigger.

Isn't Texas and Carpintis the same thing? And why would the thread turn whack?

I'm not adding anything, I just wanted to say that I pretty much LOL'd when I read that . . . nothing personal, it's just that the first question was pretty much the answer to the second question :)

I don't know anything about Texas cichlids (obviously).

that's cool . . . I meant it when I said "nothing personal"; I've just seen this question blow-up too many times . . . cheers :)

here's my carpintis, by the way (I know, cell-phone pics suck):

So what is your take on my fish? Carpintus? Glutt?

well . . . my thought was cyanoguttatum

he looks exactly like a tank full of cyanos I saw recently at one local LFS, and much, much lighter than the similar sized carpintis on sale at another. it's been my impression that cyanos at that age are more lightly colored, while carpintis are darker
