I bought this one with a couple blue acaras, and can't remember for the life of me what it is. Sorry about the poor pics. It's in a 20g by itself, and is usually swimming around merrily, but I guess it didn't like the look of the camera. It is about 2.5" right now. Thanks in advance!

Wait a sec. Isn't jewel cichlids african? I don't want any africans in my tank! <--- Sounds bad taken out of context:grinno:

Agreed Jewel. Yes they are African, but they live in the rivers. Its still a cool addition to your cast.

im not disagreeing with what the more experienced people are saying just kind of confused as the jewels they have at petco right now have black spot on gill plate and big black spot fringed by gold in middle of its body, are there different types of jewels? but yes these are african but from rivers like said before so their needed water params wouldnt be any different than acaras would need

There are several species that are commonly called Jewel cichlids, and some look quite different from the common types.

Thanks all, I guess I will be keeping him/her if no high ph is needed. Plus they can turn out to be very red and colorful!
