Place the endli in a temporary basin and remove the gravel with a net or a sieve.

Yup.Thats a juvenile Polypterus Endlicheri Endlicheri still with those external gills.I agree with the suggestion that you replace your white gravel with brown or dark colored sand if you want to retain substrate for your tank.Or you can also paint your tank's bottom panel with red or black paint so your endli bichir will have a nice color even if you have a bare tank.
