sounds like hes trying to keep a low profile, or hes being stressed by a bigger fish. as far as im concerned until he stops with the stressed colouration we cant ID it.
if its one of the A. Urophthalmus or A. festae fish its definately festae because there is no way a Mayan would have that small of a tail spot. and at that size they both look identical except for the tailspot.

not really anything to stress him. but i can wait the next couple days, see if i can get better shots of him when his colors come back to normal. doesn't hurt to give it a shot now tho. i love the fish, has alot of character, just bugs me i don't know what it is.

well by the looks of it it will take more than few days to get its color back if its a red terror.... Mine took weeks

hmm. ill have to see what happens. maybe ill have to move it back to its old tank for a while. it had its color in that tank, and seamed somewhat happy then. if thats what it takes.

the more you move it the more harm you will do to the fish. Leav it where it is. Whats your temp, and water parameters, what do you feed your fish(brand wise)

Thats definitely not a Festae. There is no Y or 4 in the first 2 bars. They dont even meet at all. Im going with a amphilophus of some sort.

Its not a red terror there is no Y or spot, it is not a Mayan. It is a midas/RD. That is what they sell. The spots are typical until the fish morphs/peals. I repeat, it is not a RT or a Mayan.
Here is the progression over a few weeks. Yours is a bit darker. Mine was that way also.

its not a festae...petco doesnt accidently ship one festae. there is no Y shape behind the head either. tail spot is just viewable at best with these pictures. festae arent brown, ever, and if they are they are likely dying. it looks to be a mayan. could also just be a flowerhorn or some kind of hybrid.

Edit, Madness beat me to it before i posted. hes right im sure its amphilophus

Where do people see festae in this fish? Even if the fish is stressed out its face/body shape look nothing like either Festae or Mayan. It's def a Midevil.
