Venezuelans may not grow into the prettiest pikes ever, but they make up for it with larger than life personalities. I had a venezuelan that I grew up from a little 4" toothpick to a 14" bruiser. He was the dominant fish in the tank, but he didn't beat up the other fish. He was very aware of me when I was in the room, and seemed to be just as interested in watching me as I was in watching him.
I don't know if they equal oscars as far as the "wet pet" title goes, but my ven pike was definitely a wet pet for me.
I've got two more that I'm growing up right now, and I hope they turn out to be as nice as he was. Like I said, they may not grow into the prettiest pikes, but they're definitely nice fish and have other qualities as well.
