this is my first bichir.. any tips and advice?

Ornate for sure. He will get 20-24 inches long so make sure you have the room for him. Any fish that can fit in its mouth will be eaten lol so watch out for that. Also, polypterus have a crude lung that allows them to breath surface air, so you will need a tight fitting top to your aquarium because they are notorious for jumping when getting air. Oh, and be prepared to buy more bichirs, because after one, you cant stop.

Ornate...pretty easy fish to keep IMO. Just keep a lid on it.

That I'm sure of.... they're an addiction.
I remember when I got my first Bichir I was like "Oh I've seen lot's of MFK members with Bichirs, I'll try one" and now the only fish I buy are either Bichirs or feeder fish for my Bichirs

Mine would eat anything they see.. shrimp, sinking pellets, tubifex worms, feeders, my fingers and they even steal arowana food

you could feed them beefheart, bloodworms,krill,feeders,silversides,some forms of pellets and more...its not hard to get them to eat other foods.
