Thank you!

Very hard to give an exact species for most Africans these days, hybridization has nearly ruined them in the hobby. Best to special order specific species you want ;) stay away from common names like "red top" witch leads me to your guy. If its not a "pseudotropheus greshakei
"
its got a lot of it in him. They can actually get really bright in color and lose there bars when they have another male in the tank to butch up to or a female to show off to. Witch is cool as its usually the other way around. Hope this helps because when they color they are a beautiful fish:D

Thanks, I only get my Malawi's from a reputable breeder and importer, but I purchased this particular fish from a local store as I have just switched back my tank to Malawis and wanted a tester fish in there to make sure everything was ok before I added all my real stock.

lol Stop im brutal. I cant walk into a lfs without buying some Rifts lol. Even when i know its a huge mistake i still go for gold :D Great fish man

Hybridization is not as much a problem as it used to be years ago. In the past, LFSs took in a lot of random hybridized fish for trade from customers. Today, LFSs and customers are smarter not to accept hybridized fish, and fish farmers are more careful to avoid producing hybridized fish that have no market. The only exceptions are hybrid peacocks with names like Ruby, Strawberry or Fire Red", but they are line bred hybrids for generations to develop a specific look.

Come to Ireland buddy ;) You're opinion would drastically change. Agree'd though its not as bad as it use to be But its not just taking in or selling bad stock that leads to this. Perfect Wild caught fish sold to a numpty (idiot) can produce hundreds of hybrids. Its the common names that really hurts them more than anything, a subject thats widely debated daily that usually heats up very easy. Witch is why im bowing out here ;) Glad you got the ID you needed to man

I am just speaking for US. The hobby becomes more sophisticated that serious hobbyists do not want even mixing of locality strains of the same species. Even chain stores like Petsmart and Petco carry mostly pure breed Africans.

Its a ice blue they have strips at times so I don't think its a hybrid
