I found these fish in my backyard stream would like to know what they are

Can they be kept in a pond? Or do they need a river or lake?

And are they illegal to keep?

That is not rainbow trout. It's a creek chub.

It may not be a rainbow but it's definetly some type of trout, maybe a brown trout? And yes they can live in a pond and yes I'm pretty sure they are illegal to own.
