IN A PLACE
I picked this one up yesterday. My first pike! I had a tough time understanding the seller so I don't know what I have. Can the experts let me know gender and strain please?

It's thin but I think I can fatten it up pretty quickly.

Congratulations man! You scored a atabapo I. Very nice pike. Had a nice group of 4 of them
Really fun. How big is he? These guys are more interactive than the tapajos I red I was gonna send you but don't have that unique orange/yellow/red color. Two very diff fish. How much did you pick him up for?

He is about 8" long. I paid $100. Do you know if it is male or female? I'm bummed I didn't get that tapajos I from you but this guy is cool and very active!

Paid a decent price man. You've got yourself a little male. Is he on pellets? Feed him heavy and he'll be nice and fat in no time!

Oliver Lucanus stated that the Atabapo I are the ladder pikes or tear drop pikes, not the red lugubris shown in the OPs picture. Here's his quote from FB South American Cichlids.

"i caught and exported this fish first, in 1999, and then we did not know the red one existed, so we named it "Crenicichla spec. Atabapo" - so the red one must be spec. 2 or cf.lugubris Atabapo. i hate designations with numbers it is nonsense since you can never say clearly who is what. I called it "teardrop pike" later people said "ladder pike" i think either one of those is much more clear."

That's actually outdated information. We know for sure this is the lugubris atabapo I or cf. atabapo which honestly I can't tell the difference or don't even think there is a difference. The tear drop/ladder pike is atabapo II. Oliver lucanus is a really good knowledgeable guy but often jumps to conclusions to quickly... On more than one occasion one even regarding my atabapo 1 pikes misIDing them

If Oliver did not identify the first atabapo red, then who did?

I don't think it matters if he was the first to discover them (IF he was the first). As far as what hobbyists nowadays know, A1 is the much redder one and A2 is the ladder pike.

As far as the U.S. Pet trade knows them the OPs fish is sp. atabapo I or sp. lugubrious atabapo and the ladder pike is sp. atabapo II. The whole atabapo lugubris aren't an actually described species yet. So call them whatever you like I guess but to people in the U.S. And all over the world will call these the atabapo I

I read the oliver lucanus thing on FB myself and was a bit shocked as these are commonly referred to as atabapo 1 with the tear drop being atabapo 2. That seems to be the consensus in the hobby. Until they are described, this new revelation will only serve to muddy the waters.

If he is the first to discover these fish, it's hard to argue with him...bUT we've been calling thus fisb atabapo 1 for a long time now.
