Is this a pike? Is this even a cichlid? It looks a bit like a bowfin to me.

It was sold to me as a cichlid, but I was not sure. I got it an inch long, and it was not particularly elongated. Now, it is now six inches, and is pretty placid in my varied cichlid and loach tank.

Looks to me like Anabas testudineus (the climbing perch) a member of a Anabantids (gourami family)
Originally range from India to China. (I used to see them in Viet Nam in fish markets, for sale as food)
Can walk on land, and live out of water for hours.

Yes, that looks like it. I have been wondering for months. It certainly does come up and gulp air sometimes, but is not aggressive or predatory (that I can see). It eats pellets.

I have not seen them at any market in Thailand.

Yea, asian climbing perch.

Yep,and while I have never been to Thailand or anywhere else in that part of the world I have seen frozen packs of them in H Mart.

Yup it's anabas. Common food fish farmed here in India. I've seen some at the lfs. They are not super aggressive but can certainly do well in a semi - aggressive community with larger barbs and mid sized American cichlids.
