JDs have a wide range of colors, whether on certain substrate where they can be brown, on certain substrate black, and/or depending on light and shadows.
Age, mood, or dominance can also play a role.

In the video above compare the JDs in deep water, much darker in color, and where they are the dominant cichlid, and
toward the end of the video where in sunlit shallow areas the younger less dominant individuals are lmuch ighter in color.
