it's not a gator gar i think it's a florida gar ?

Florida / spotted Gar

There is no point in trying to hard to distinguish the difference between the two. It will make one's head bloody from repeatably smacking it on a brick wall. Care is identical as is the general growth and size of the fish.

yea its a spotted/florida. Mine is the same coloration i just wish mine was as dark as my friends cept his is only like 8inch and mine is 15 hehe nice gar though

how can you see the difference between a spotted and florida gar ?
he/she is 12inch and my tank is 80x40x24 inches

Can't remember exactly but something about the snout is 2/3rds from the end to eyes is 2/3rds the body. Dunno if this makes sence

There are subtle differences between the two in regards to proportions and measurements all of which are extremely difficult to take from a photo. Even then the variability of the fish cause further confusion and eventually the only 100% ID remains Spotted / Florida

In general, the only sure way to ID these fish is to know exactly where they where caught or if the Aquaculture facility has details on where their broodstock where caught. Distribution is for the most part not overlapping between these two species.

This formula does not work with captive fish or YoY fish and is only partially accurate in adult fish.
