ID SA/CA Cichlid Mix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah the mouth on the first pics shows the trademark jack dempsey sheen on them

Yeah, the mouth is definately JD, amongst other traits. A lot of cichlid crosses produce offspring that are not so obvious. But you can sure see both the jag and JD traits in this one, so I think its pretty safe to call it a jag X JD, even with out seeing the parents.

JDXParachromis(of some sort - Maguense??) are we correct?

Yes, I guess we can't be absolutely certain that the Parachromis parent is a jag. Markings seem most consistent with jag, though you really can't rule out P. motoguense, or even P. loiselli or P. fredrichstalli, entirely.

If the resulting cross exhibated a spot at the base of the pectorial fin, then we could say jag for sure ( dovii also has this trait, but all other markings on these fish are not consistent with dovii), but neither hybrid fish has this spot at the base of their pectorial fin.

So I guess all one can say for sure is: JD X Parachromis species.

im pretty sure it is Jaguar x Jack Dempsey as well. The head and mouth look like a Jack almost exactly. And the colors, and body shape say parachromis managuense, essspecially the fins on it almost kind of crimped looking. You can rule out the other parachromis species like motaguense, dovii, fredrickstalii, and losielli because of if it were one of these it would have yellow, or orangish color fir sure.

Hmmm, I really can't understand why everyone is thinking this fish has Jack Dempsey in it. I guess I just can't see it. I'm seeing a female Dovii in the head/face area and a Jag with more Dovii green in the body. So I'm guessing Dovii x Managuense.
