Looking good! Nice to see a growout on a fish that is available to nearly everyone, and that there is debate over growth as well. Have mine in a 400 gal pond currently and has grown from 11" or so to 13.5" since january of this year. Not fast growth, but growth none the less. I have always been shocked at how slow the ones I get grow compared to the eventual size of the fish. at 1" every 2-3 months would take many years to get over 3'. Especially with diminishing returns that you get on fish growth the older they get. Mine is over 2 years old now probably closer to 2.5 years.

I have heard of both fast AND slow growth... Everybody thinks different things and have had a different experiances... Nobody will tell you the same story...

I bought the largest in the tank hoping for a faster growth rate, but wasnt to be lol. Seems like I usually have some pretty bad luck though in the tanks I keep them in and have filter failures, heater failures, ect. This time I actually have kept one for a few years without too much hassle thus far. Hopefully(knocks on wood) I will have this fish for many years to come and it will grow into a true giant.

furious, wat u gonna do with them when they grow this tank out.

I had 4 but am now down to 2... One albino and one normal... I have no clue why 2 of the normals died... Weird... When the 2 out grow this tank they will either go into my 300 (not for life) or a circular pool...

Sudden or quick deaths most usually occur when oxygen concentration drops beyond what a fish can handle. Dats (IME) are sensitive to oxygen concentration, more so than most other fishes I kept. So, it is not it. Poison/toxin introduction/contamination is another reason but pretty rare. Other than that, fish display symptoms and stop eating long before they pass away (from a sickness most usually).

Strange, as you said.

That's really strange, they where doing so well. You should get some more, maybe try paroons this time.

I have had the same kind of luck with paroons....eating like pigs, good tank maintenance and soon they stop eating and die shortly after.
