I'm assuming you bought them from different places? heres another reason to think of it. if you put a rtc, tsn, or any of those larger cats in a 20 gallon tank they will still grow large and will soon not be able to turn around. there used to be a vid on youtube of a 40" rtc in a 48" 75 gallon tank. some ID sharks will do this(check out the link i posted) and some won't(see link). this is just the way I see it. they very so by size so much that it amazes me.

Honestly I think it has do with the diet, the water quality, the tank size, the tankmates and the husbandry can have effects on ID's sizes. IMO all sharks are just one species- ID shark

Yes they were purchased about 30 years apart at different locations. It's been my experience that all fish I've purchased over ther years regardless of species seem to grow faster and larger than most information on the Internet say they do. IDs are just an extreme example of this.

IDK if I'd agree that IDS growth rate and final size is in great dissonance with what's reported on the net IME and IMO. I think we have just established that what's reported varies way too much. The issue at hand is that people report too vastly varying "final" sizes of th IDSs.
Don't have a link atm but basically what happened was that scientists at a university here put two mirror carp of the same size in seperate 2 foot aquariums. A mirror carp will grow to at least two feet so obviously this is too small. All the conditions were the same; same tank size, no decor,same food, good filtration. The only thing different was that 1 had absolutely no water changes and 1 had a constant supply of fresh water( 1 think 100% in an hour)
Well after a few months the first one (no wc) had reached 8".but the one with constant fresh water had it's tail hanging out of the tank!

Extreme example but makes the point. I see. It may not have been some kind of mysterious, biologically/chemically induced stunting that proceeds by yet unknown biological mechanism. A lot of this could be simply because one had a good appetite in pristine water whie the other didn't - there have been papers published to the effect of slow/lazy digestion in goldfish as a result of high nitrates to the point of intestinal clogging. No fish will eat well or likely at all throughout this digestive disorder.
I am curious where the 10% number is coming from too? I am far from sure but I imagine (may have heard) that the fish breeders put fish like paroons, rtc, etc. in tiny tiny tanks to produce short-body variants - the extreme in stunting. Not all fish species stunt at all and not all fish even of the same genus and species stunt.

Yeah. Just for heck I can post a vid of a 23 year old stunted man that was kept in a small crib his whole life. He's only like 3' long
