ID some new fish in my tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm thinking about going back and picking up 5 more Centrarchus from the LFS (they had a tank full of them) and turning my 55 gallon into a biotope for them.

I agree with Jonclark, both the grammodes and haitiensus would not be good tankmates.
Haitiensus are best kept alone, along with their aggressiion level, they need larger tanks and warmer temps than most cichlids to stay healthy (high 80s), and the grammodes are just too aggressive for most communities.
A pair of haitiensus should have nothing smaller than 100 gals just to themselves

and keep a close eye on the grammodes they can take out all other fish in a tank overnight once they hit stride

I know the last one is a Jack Dempsey, I was just trying to get a clear side shot of the grammodes and she jumped in.

Thanks for the positive IDs though! So far they all seem to be getting along very well. Next fish I'm on the lookout for are a black nasty, a decent looking green terror, a decent little tiger oscar, a festae, and a nicaraguan cichlid.

I wouldn't add black nasty I have yet to see one in a community and not a solo

I would be putting the haitiensis in a different tank if I do find one. I would want to try breeding them.

As for the grammodes, I'm keeping an eye on all the cichlids in the tank and they get along so far (crowding like Africans cichlids seems to work pretty well for me so far, not even a nipped fin). It makes an awesome display, and I just move whatever fish cause problems to another tank if aggression shows up or the fish start getting too crowded. Right now the grammodes seems to be best buddies with the smaller blood parrot and the smaller flowerhorn. The tank has 2 flowerhorns (1 kamfa and 1 kamalau), 1 carpintis, 2 blood parrots (one is the dominant fish in the tank), 1 jack dempsey, 1 creamsicle midas, 1 red devil, 1 synspilum, 1 grammodes, 1 flier cichlid, 1 belly crawler pike, 2 sveni pikes, and a glass cutter catfish.

O_o Good luck with that mix, you really didnt hold back on that shop credit. Any FTS?

That is a group of rough customers. Don't expect the centrarchus to last too long.

It's actually kind of funny that you mention that. So far he seems to be more than holding his own. He actively keeps the other fish out of his little spot, even periodically chases the larger flowerhorn. If and when it does become a problem though I will pull him out. I converted my 187 gallon to freshwater today so he could share that tank with some columbian tetras and clown barbs, the ropefish, and the various catfish that now call it home.
