Does anyone know what these are? They're about 3" and silver with a greenish tint above the lateral line. They also have a black dot on each side of their face.

Golden shiners
Depending on the conditions, they might not have as defined of a lateral line bar and don't always exhibit the black spots on the nostrils. We sold these at the hatchery I worked at, so I've seen tens of thousands of them ;)

Thanks, you're awesome.

What are you doing with them? Just keeping them as schooling fish? They are somewhat like native bala sharks. Normally in an aquarium, they'll get around 6-8", but I've heard of them getting over 10" in the wild in the South

Actually, after their quarantine and fattening up period, they'll be used as feeders. Just an occasional treat. Already raise guppies for feeders but these are a lot bigger.

That's why we sold them at the hatchery. They are good food for bass and other big fish

yup i use them as well. Over here You can get a pound of small shiners for 14 bucks. Which is supposed to be 28-30 dozen. So at bulk you get them for 3-5 cents a peice. Beats the local lfs's feeder prices.

they are Shiners, but look at the black stripe on a few of them. Not sure of the species. and andyjs, Bala Sharks are not native and gdet about 4x bigger.
