I did read the whole thread, but I've caught Golden Shiners and it was much more oblong/round and had no stripe. and it WAS a golden shiner, was not a rudd.

All of them are golden shiners and its normally for them have black stripe as most of golden shiners in picture are washed out.

I think andyjs meant that golden shiner looks like bala shark in North American version, both Southern golden shiner and bala shark are same size.

Bala Sharks get much bigger...

Actually bala shark get only up to 16 inch long and 12 inch are average size for bala shark in aquariums and Southern golden shiner are way bigger than Northern golden shiner. Southern goldens reach more than a foot long. And golden/rudd hybrids are much bigger than Southern goldens.
