ID this cat please

It may be a vaill, but there are a few other possibilities too. I don't recall off the top of my head what they are, but when thebiggerthebetter finds this thread, he'll straighten that out.

I don't think we can ID this fish from the pics available.

The best we can say is that IF it is a Brachyplatystoma, then it would be B. vaillanti.

I will try my best to get a better picture. Is there anything on the body that can help identify it?

There are misc. clues all over it's body. I think Dive and Chix already have the genus and species correctly identified. The more whole body pics you have, the better.

Mostly the relationship between the caudal peduncle, the adipose fin and the shape & size of the tail. Full length side shots of the whole body would be ideal.

I will post a better picture when he is moved into the 480 I'm building. He is in my planted tank right now and is hidden pretty well.

Vaillantii looks close to other smaller-medium Pims (see http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=38098&sid=b2be6162c73d505d80edb99d0fc8b577), esp.
-- Pimelodus albicans,
-- an Iheringichthys species, and
-- Duopalatinus peruanus.

As Rob says, need more and better, clear shots and even then I'd not be overly sure as I need to study the differences much, much more.

Post on that thread on PCF I provided and see what people say there but with full body shots. You can use a photo tank for the purpose. The fish can handle it.

I keep thinking about this fish. You (or I?) could poke RedTailRob, Amiidae, Garniac, and Unungy (known to me to have or have had a vaillantii or its look alike) to provide their opinions.
