x2. Your TSN appears to have this same syndrome. I had theorized that this actually starts at a young age due to excessive stunting very early in life of catfish. I have seen this in a variety of different species of catfish. I also had a tsn named lumpy that had this very severely. Nothing you can do for it and as they grow it gets worse. It may get bad enough to where they cannot eat in the future. The tsn I bought from a lfs had it on sale for 8 mos before I bought it. It never grew while at the store. It was 2".

I think its pure inbreeding or man made breeding..ive owned dozens of cats like this from 2"-28" and actually seek them out lol. The deformities always grew with the fish and affected them in no way. Ime mutants are usually a bit more agro aswell :). I dont think it has anything to do with stunting... most deformed humans were born that way. I have a 20" tsn that looks like camel joe lol he was like this at 2" when i got him. Also had one with a half circle fin shape portrusion on its head, it was fully part of the skull and grew with the fish around 2-4" off the head. Plenty of weird human skull deformities out there.

The ones I had like this started out as almost normal looking juvies and then it developed as they grew. One was so severe that he could barely eat by the time he was 26". I too would love to get more like this. They seem to have a lot more personality and are more bold when it comes to feeding. YOu may be right on inbreeding as well. I've seen this in channels, rtc, rtc x tsn, ect. Crazy. Some people would put them down rather than have them. Make great pets though. Not like anyone is gonna be breeding them anytime soon lol.

Got any pics of it on channels?

I've only ever seen this on pims. I even think I remember seeing dourada with a nose like this.

oh man that channel was from years ago. Too many crashes on my computers over the years. I am pretty much pictureless. I use to have a file with nothing but deformed catfish pics. SOme were really odd. Seen this on tigs as well as some asian types also.

BTW my unofficial name for this condition is dolphin syndrome lol.

I tend to think it is just an Achara catfish, aka Leiarius marmoratus or L. longibarbis. I've owned ~7 of 2'-ers. Only one had that different coloration/pattern on him. It may be a longibarbis - this was just split off into its own species very recently and TBH I don't know the differences between it and marmoratus. Or it can be a sub-species, or geographical variant.

Yes, I tend to think his snout is disfigured perhaps as a result of birth defect or slamming into a tank wall. Mine that had the same pattern and look had a normal shaped snout.
