Not to many animals change color with age.

Goldfish do...the brown ones frquently get orange/gold as they mature. Try saltwater fish lol, about half of all aquarium species change colour/pattern, often drastically.

its true, many goldfish are black when small, and turn orange as they get bigger..

but there are lots of white ones in small feeder batches too..and they are not 20 years old :)

Do they go from gold to white like the guy says his did?

It's possible. There are many factors that could affect its coloration; food, lighting, background and substrate colors, etc.

Exactly. I do know that goldfish will turn white if kept in dark conditions.

Yeah, It's unfortunate that he keeps it in such a small tank. He says its been in there all it's life.
No way that fish has grown to that size in that tank for life :nilly:
And no way the tank/water is that clean with a fish that proportionatly large in it.

I had a customer bring me a 12" Emperor ID that had been raised in a 30 gallon for almost 10 years...fish looked like ass though...

That's definately amazing, but look at the apparent water quality of the OP's fish. IMO the guy put the fish in there for photos.
I love when people say something ''looks like ass''
