ID this fish! sneaking suspicion that it is

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is precisely why provenance back to the wild becomes so important with most cichlids. There are numerous brasiliensis-types, and if this fish is as solid yellow as you state, then it's one that I have never seen before, nor is it shown in Weidner's book, which is pretty much the bible on SA eartheaters. Many of these fish get lumped together, and many are still undescribed. Unless the LFS that you purchased it at can come up with more info for you I suspect it will remain a brasiliensis-type, and that's about as close as you're going to get as far as an accurate ID.

well the LFS I got it from is a fancy store that always has rarer fish in, electric cats, true festae, trimacs etc. and this guy was in a tank with some other eartheaters but he wasnt actually labelled So I just got it for the price of a Heckeli. under normal lighting, without using a camera flash he is a solid yellow colour all over, similar to a female salvini. The reason why i had to have this fish is cause as far as I know there are no Yellow Brasiliensis, which is why I got the fish hoping it was some local variant or rarer Geo.

Nope Pisces in the NE, they can order you in practically anything. Along with Riverfront they are the 2 best stores here.
I prefere Pisces cause they have a lot of cool kinds of cichlids come in there.

and no I've never been shocked by my catfish he seems really calm. although I do keep him alone... just to be sure.

Both stores are customers of mine, so I'm familiar with the type of live stock they carry. :)

Check with Norm or Michael & see if they know what that fish was listed as from their vendor. If there was only 1 that came in, then it most likely came in as a contaminant with their other geos. They may not be able to provide you with any further info but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Good luck in your search.

thanks RD thats a good idea, I noticed there wasnt any other brasiliensis in the entire store.
They also had tonnes of 1" Jurupari for only 8$. talk about a good deal if you wanted to set up an eartheater tank.

May I also add, the site I linked earlier with info about G Brasiliensis, said that varients from fast flowing rivers have a more elongated appearence. mine does seem to be more elongated than the other ones I had, but that could simply just be that I never had my others as juvies so I never saw them.
